Bakken, Bertha (Engen) 1838 - 1926

Mrs. Bertha Bakken, who was one of the early settlers of Winneshiek county, passed away last Thursday, Feb 18th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs.E.C. Magnus, at the age of 87 years, 9 months and 17 days. Death came as a welcome relief to old age, the deceased having been confined to her bed for several months. Bertha Engen was born in Norway, April 29, 1838 coming to America with her parents when a girl in her teens, location near Decorah and later moving to Ridgeway. On Oct. 27, 1858, she was united in marriage to Andrew Bakken. Ten children were born to them, six of whom with the father preceded their mother in death. Two passed away during infancy, Olavus died at the age of 22, Ed. passed away in 1913, Mrs. C.K. Olson in the year 1924, Henry in 1922 and the father about 22 years ago. Mrs. Bakken had made her home with the E.C. Magnus family for the past eight years, and here never wanted for the best loving care and attention. She leaves to mourn two sons, G.A. Bakken of Ossian, Albert of Fisher, Minn., and two daughters, Mrs. Hans Melaas and Mrs. E.C. Magnus, both of Ridgeway, nineteen grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren, also one sister, Mrs. W. Williams of Decorah.
Short funeral services were held on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. from the home and two o'clock from the Madison church conducted by Rev. D.C. Jordahl and Rev. H.M. Normann. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery. The pallbearers were Andrew Magnus, Spencer Bakken, Fred Sanderson and Albert Bakken.
