Mr. J. J. Martinek, for many years proprietor of the Palace hotel in this city, while in a demented condition last Wednesday, took carbolic acid with suicidal intent, his death resulting in a few minutes. Just when the rash act was committed is not known, but his body, then stiff, was discovered at about 1:30 under a railroad bridge about one-half mile east of town by Henry Wiest. The deceased was born in this city on August 18, 1877, and grew to manhood here. For some few years he was engaged as bartender at Moorehead, Minn., but of late most of his time has been spent at home. His untimely demise was a shock to the entire community, as he had many friends here, and out of town as well. He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Anna Martinek and his sisters, Mrs. Frank Benesh, Mrs. Jos. Sindelar and Miss Anna Martinek, all of this city. The funeral services were held at the home on Friday and interment made at St. John’s cemetery, where he was laid to rest near his father, who preceded him to the unknown world about nine years ago. The sympathy of the entire community goes out to the sorrowing ones.
