Orietta Hickman, age 91, passed away peacefully on Sunday June 5, 2022, at Attic Angels households.

She was born on Dec. 28, 1930, in Ridgeway, Iowa, the daughter of Oliver & Emma (Albertson) Hellen. She married Donald Hickman on Jan. 31, 1957, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Orietta grew up on a farm near Decorah, Iowa. Her father Oliver passed away when she was only 11 years old. Oriette attended Luther College and had fond memories of the friendships she made while at school. Oriette and Don raised three children along with the help of her mother Emma. Orietta was a proud homemaker who loved caring for and nurturing her family. After her children were grown, she enjoyed traveling with her husband on annual journeys to Europe. As exciting and adventurous as the European trips were, Orietta’s heart remained firmly planted in the Midwest spending most of her adult life in Madison and Des Moines.

She loved the simple pleasures in life, adored her children and grandchildren, bargain hunting at her favorite store, Von Maur, and living a slower pace of life that so many people today seem to long for, but few achieve.

Orietta is survived by her daughter Diane (George) Hulick of Verona, WI, sons Jeffrey (Sherry) Hickman of Valparaiso, IN and Gregory (Cathy) Hickman of Lake Elmo, MN; grandchildren Emily (Hector) Valdivia of Madison, WI, Collin (Kirstin) Hulick of Madison, WI, Samuel Hickman of St. Paul, MN, and Erica Hickman of Valparaiso, IN; great-grandchildren Quetzali, Roble, and Olin Valdivia. She is preceded in death by her husband Don on November 15, 2018, and her parents Oliver and Emma.

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, July 2, at Cress Funeral Home, 6021 University Avenue in Madison, Wis., at 11 a.m.

Heaven gained an angel. We are so blessed to have had Mom all these years. We love her and will miss her and are comforted in knowing that she is at peace. The family wishes to thank the staff at Attic Angels and Agrace Hospice for their wonderful care of taking care of Mom. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to Agrace Hospice www.agrace.org.
