Ron was a graduate of DeSales Catholic Central High School in 1966; he went on to proudly graduate from Winona State University. After graduation he enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in Alaska. Ron then became the Minnesota Deputy Commissioner of Veterans Affairs. Ron was passionate about his position.

Sadly, on that fateful day November 28, 1988 at the age of 41, Ron had a brain aneurysm that ruptured; it would forever change the trajectory of his life. From then on, Ron only had a memory of about 5 minutes although he could still remember many things prior to about 1974. Throughout the years that followed, Ron was always with family for gatherings and holidays; despite his memory challenges, his cheerful fun-loving personality remained. The adjustment to Ron’s new way of life would bring out the many helpers who would support and care for him throughout the remainder of his life. His mother, brother and sister- in- law, his niece and nephew and spouses and their families as well. Kim O’Connell was Ron’s everyday help, and no doubt one of the reasons Ron was able to remain at home for as long as he did. Eventually Ron made his way back home to Ossian to be cared for by the staff at Ossian Senior Hospice. There were many others that helped with various things such as pick up and drop offs for church, the haircuts done by his cousin Debby and great niece Jacqueline, and lawn care from TJ and monthly cleaning by Kari. There were so many people that supported Ron in so many ways. It truly takes a village.

Ron is survived by his sister, Franciscan Sister Maxine Lavell of Dubuque, IA; niece, Julie (Craig) Reisdorf of Blue Mounds, WI and nephew, Michael (Beatriz) Lavell of Blue Mounds, WI; great nieces, Whitney (Branden) Mauger of Blue Mounds, WI, Tanya (Peter) Docken of Mt. Horeb, WI, Jacqueline (Jeremy) Kronabetter of Blue Mounds, Astrid (Zach) Melms of Janesville, WI, Jaika (Ben) Makos of Blue Mounds, WI and great-great nieces and nephews, Claire, Lucy, Kaleb and Nolan Mauger, Madysen and Maverick Docken, Hudson and Crosbi Kronabetter, Michael and Mila Makos.

Ron is preceded in death by his father, Forest Lavell in 1963; mother, Delores Reilly in 1995; brother, Michael in 2015 and sister-in-law, Joan in 2021.

A Memorial Mass will be at 11:00 am on Monday, June 20, 2022 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Ossian, Iowa with a one hour visitation before Mass at the church on Monday. Rev. Robert Gross will be the Celebrant.

Burial with Military Rites will follow at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Ossian, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Ronald’s honor may be given to Ossian American Legion, St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church or Ossian Senior Hospice.
