DEATH BY SUICIDE.
F. N. Egge Shoots Himself at an Early Hour Monday Morning.
Monday morning the lifeless body of F. N. Egge was found in the blacksmith shop of his brother-in-law Alderman K. W. Knutson. A revolver lying by the dead man’s side and a hole in the head at the temple indicated that death was due to suicide. Coroner Swezey was notified, and an inquest was held, the result being a verdict in accordance with the fact as stated above.
For some time past Mr. Egge has been in poor health. At times he imagined that he was being pursued by some unknown enemy, but more lately his difficulty had been that of insomnia. Saturday he was before the insane commission, and during his examination told of his mental difficulties, but acknowledged that he knew they were purely imaginary. A thorough examination could not develop sufficient cause for his detention as an insane person, and he was discharged. Sunday he was about the streets and appeared much the same as usual, in fact brighter, if anything. He left his room at the National hotel about 4 o’clock Monday morning, and that was the last seen or heard of him until his lifeless body was found. His bed had not been slept in, indicating that he had brooded over his condition during the night.
There are features of this case which make it a particularly sad one. Mr. Egge was undoubtedly one of the most capable workmen Decorah has ever known. His talent for designing unusual pieces of work and repairs of intricate machinery lock, etc., amounted to little less than genius. A number of years ago he became addicted to the use of liquor, and this proved his downfall. He had not, however, been drinking for some months. Mr. Egge is survived by a son and daughter, Chas. Egge of Chicago and Mrs. Clara Schmidt of Oklahoma. His wife has been dead upward of twenty years.

Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born March 23, 1854 and died Oct. 21, 1907. He is buried in the Lutheran Decorah Cemetery.
