Decorah Republican December 20, 1906, P4 C2

Another Pioneer at Rest.
After an illness lasting only a few days, Mrs. S. C. Treat died last Friday evening at the family home on west Main street, in her eightieth year. Mrs. Treat’s maiden name was Eliza Dunn and she was born at Geneva, Ohio, July 27, 1827. She was married at Quincy, Ill., Feb. 2, 1851, to Sylvester C. Treat, and continued to reside there until 1853 when they moved to Burlington, Iowa, where they resided until 1857, when they came to Decorah to make the home that has since been their abiding place. To them five children were born. The two oldest died in infancy at Burlington. Of the other three, one daughter, Miss Ella Treat, with the aged husband and father, survives. Their son George died two years ago at Minot, N. D., and their youngest daughter, Mrs. M. T. Torsen, passed away but a few weeks ago in California. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the house and the remains were interred at the Phelps cemetery. Reverends M. Willett and Wm. McVettie officiated.
In the death of Mrs. Treat another tie has been severed that binds the fast thinning ranks of pioneer residents with the present day. Though never a woman of demonstrative nature, quietly but surely she drew around her friends who were steadfast and who in return experienced the joy of association and fellowship with one who ever held them in love and kindness. To the husband and children she was all that a devoted wife and mother could be and to them the one source of comfort in parting is that her last hours were those of quiet restfulness. Although she had not been in robust health for several years, at the end there was no pain, and death came more as one passes into peaceful sleep.
