Daryl Jon Bartels, Area I teacher in construction technology and a resident of Calmar, died Thursday, May 8 at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester following an illness of four months. Mr. Bartels was 32. He and his family had lived in Calmar since 1968.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 10 at St. Aloysious Church in Calmar with burial in the Lutheran Cemetery. Pastor Marvin Berkeland conducted final rites. Pallbearers were Fritz Bolgren, K.V. Meyer, Ray Kalec, Orville Stofferahn and Don Nelson of Calmar and Jerry Fischer of West Union. Bill Bravener was organist and funeral arrangements were made by French Funeral Home.

Daryl Bartels was born August 31, 1942 in Maynard, Ia., the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Bartels now of Estherville, Ia. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1968 and had continued work towards his Master's Degree at the University of Northern Iowa. He served with the U.S. Army for three years and part of that time had been stationed in Korea. A member of the Lutheran Church, he had been a trustee on the church council.

He was married to the former Kathryn Edwards July 28, 1967 in Estherville. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Edwards of Mesa, Ariz.

He is survived by his parents; his wife; a son, Mark, at home; a brother Allan Bartels of Knoxville, Ia. and a sister, Mrs. Thomas (Vicki) Schultz of White Bear Lake, Minn.

Mr. Bartels had worked in the drafting department of the City of Waterloo before accepting a position with Area I seven years ago.
