A Pioneer Mother Gone.
Friday last, Aug. 24th, after a life full of usefulness, Signe Berguffson Christen passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Caroline Nelson in Bluffton, aged 83 years, 2 months and 14 days. Mrs. Christen was born June 10, 1823, in Telemarken, Norway, and came to America in 1843, settling near Madison, Wis. In 1848 she was married to Sven Christen and in 1854 they came to Winneshiek county to reside. Their first home was in Decorah; later they moved onto a farm in Madison township, but a few years later found them again residing in Decorah, later on the farm now owned by L. R. Blodgett. Finally they bought a farm in Bluffton which continued to be the family home. In 1868 on February 21st, Mr. Christen died, leaving his wife with six young children to face the world. How well the mother met this affliction is shown in the character of these children all of whom survive to rise up and call her blessed. The children are Mrs. Bartha Mott, Clarence and Albert of Decorah, Mrs. T. Nelson and Samuel of Bluffton and Walter of Anita, N. D. During all these years Mrs. Christen has known no serious illness up to within four days of the date of her death. Then the weight of years seemed to fall at once and the end came soon. The latter years of her life were spent at the home of her daughter in Bluffton, but the frequent visits of her children betokened the strong bond of love by which she held them. The funeral was held Monday, Rev. Otteson of Cresco officiating, and the remains were interred in the Phelps cemetery.

Transcriber’s Note: Her gravestone shows her first name as Singne and Find a Grave shows her maiden name as Bjorgulvsdtr.
