Joseph A. Valenta of Calmar died July 24 at LaCrosse Lutheran Hospital after a short illness following surgery. He was 82. Mr. Valenta was born in Spillville and had lived in Calmar from 1951 to 1975 where he was employed by the Calmar Manufacturing Co.

Mr. Valenta is survived by a daughter, Genevieve B. Lauter of Livonia, Mich. and a brother, Frank Valenta of Grafton, N.D.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Lillian, four brothers and four sisters.

Mr. Valenta was born May 29, 1893 and was married in 1930 to Lilliam Barbara Nesvik in Chicago. She died in 1973. He was a veteran of World War I and a charter member of the American Legion, Halverson-Giesen Post 266.

Before moving to Calmar, Mr. Valenta lived in Ferndale, Mich. from 1930 to 1951.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 26 at 2 p.m. at French Funeral Home in Calmar with burial in the Calmar Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. Marvin Berkeland conducted final rites. Pallbearers were Ron Hageman, Richard Krall and Milton Sjulli, all of Calmar, Harlan Nesvik, Ossian, Clarence Marhoul of Calmar and Stanley Munkel of Lime Springs.
