Smock, Richard C. 1933 - 1975

Richard C. Smock of Rock Island, Ill. and formerly of Decorah, died Friday, June 13 of injuries received in an explosion May 23 at the Multi-Foods Plant in Rock Island where he was employed. He was 42 years of age. Mr. Smock had been in critical condition following the explosion, with burns over 80 percent of his body, and was a patient at Franciscan Medical Hospital in Rock Island.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 16 at Wheelin Funeral Home in Rock Island with burial in Sommerville, Mass.

Richard Smock was born in Decorah and graduated from Decorah High School. He served eight years in the army and moved from Decorah approximately nine years ago.

He is survived by a son, Lester Smock, 12, of Rock Island; three brothers, Donald Smock, Coronado, Calif., Bernell Smock, Barstow, Calif. and Elmer Smock of Portland, Ore. and three sisters, Shirley Fonseca of Rock Island, Mrs. Lyle Numedahl, Calmar and Mrs. Robert Gilbertson, Decorah.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Ida Smock.

Mr. Smock was a former member of St. Benedicts Church in Decorah.
