Giesen, Philip Joseph 1906 - 1975

Philip Joseph Giesen, prominent Calmar businessman, died March 28 at the Veteran's Hospital in Iowa City. He was 69 and had owned and operated Phil's Cafe in Calmar since 1931.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 31 at St. Aloysious Church in Calmar where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery with the following men serving as pallbearers: Harry Black, Godfrey Klimesh, Roman Rausch, Sidney Stenseth, Leo Tekippe and Harry Hubbard. Msgr. G.V. Steiert and the Rev. Peter Graff conducted the services , and funeral arrangements were made by French Funeral Home.

Mr. Giesen was born March 1, 1906 in Calmar and had lived his entire life there, except when he served in World War II. He was educated in the local schools and was a member of the American Legion and the Elks Lodge.

The well-known Calmar man is survived by his wife, the former Noble Stavness, two brothers, Donald Giesen of Mason City and Robert Giesen of Littleton, Colo. and three sisters, Mary (Mrs. Vincent Kueper) of Dubuque, Delores (Mrs. Lester Harper) Englewood, Calif. and Helen Sires of Omaha, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Nellie Bernatz Giesen, and two brothers, William and Carl Giesen, Carl Giesen was killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor in World War II, and the Halvorson-Giesen Legion Post in Calmar was named for him.
