Another Pioneer Laid at Rest.
David N. Hoyt was born in Ridgefield, Conn., Oct 26, 1831, and died in Decorah June 9th, 1906.
In 1854 Mr. Hoyt married Miss Maria Shotwell, a native of Pennsylvania, who survives him. In the same year they came to Iowa and located in Freeport, then the dangerous rival of Decorah for county seat honors. While residing there he pursued his trade as carpenter and joiner, and did much pubic service as a bridge builder. In 1875 he purchased a farm near Ridgeway, on which he resided for thirteen years, and thereon laid the foundations to a modest competency. In 1888 he came to Decorah, where he lived until death released him from the feebleness and decay that old age brought him. To him were born nine children, seven of whom survive him, namely, E. W., Warren and Miss Allie of Decorah, Mrs. H. J. Klemme of Belmond, Ernest of Ridgeway, Fred A. of Fayette and Walter of Madison township.
Wherever he has lived D. N. Hoyt has borne the character of a Christian’ citizen. He made no ostentatious exhibit of a religious profession, but lived it by a daily walk and conversation that marked a genuine believer in all things that make towards truth and uprightness. As a consequence he was a good citizen in the best sense of that term, attaining as near to perfect living as human nature permitted. As best he could be aided in all things good and true that his citizenship touched. The Methodist church and faith gave him the largest liberty to work freely; but he was not a sectarian, and wherever he met other lovers of his Master he was at home. All who knew him intimately will heartily unite in saying, “A good man has gone to his final rest and home.”
Funeral services were held from the family home on Tuesday afternoon, a large company gathering.
