Mrs. Eunice Cooney, one of the early settlers of this county, passed away at her home in this city Sunday morning at 9:20 o’clock, at the advanced age of 89 years, 2 months and 24 days. Eunice Thompson was born at Homer, Courtland Co., N. Y., Feb. 5, 1817. She with her family moved to Ohio in her early childhood, locating near Cleveland. In 1836 she was married to Geo. Cooney at Rockford, Ohio. In 1838 she with her husband journeyed to Illinois, where they made their home for 12 years. In 1850 they moved to Iowa, first locating in Clayton county, and a year later moved to Winneshiek county. She has resided continuously in Fort Atkinson since June 19th, 1854. Mrs. Cooney has been a pioneer woman and knew well the hardships of pioneer life, and bore her share of them courageously, being so constituted that she got much pleasure out of life, feeling that each and alle vents must be met bravely. Her husband and six of her ten children have preceded her to the better land. She leaves to mourn her death, four daughters, Mrs. C. Brace and Mrs. E. J. Sabin of this city, Mrs. A. C. Howard of York, Neb., and Mrs. W. J. Wood of Detroit, Minn., also 28 grandchildren, 50 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren. “Grandma Cooney” as she was familiarly called was a kind neighbor, a faithful wife and mother, ever ready as far as was in her power to help, cheer and comfort those about her. She had the love and esteem of her immediate family and many friends, which she highly appreciated. She was beloved unto the fifth generation. The funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Methodist church, Rev. Smith of Calmar officiating.
