DIED.

COONEY – At his residence, Ft. Atkinson, Iowa, Oct. 21st, 1893, Mr. Geo. Cooney, aged 85 years, 7 months and 21 days.

George Cooney was born at Brownstown Co. of West Meath, Ireland, March 1st, 1808, sailed for America at about 21 years of age. The trip was made in 44 days, landed at Quebec, Canada, worked his way through to Cleveland, Ohio.

He married Eunice Thompson at Cleveland, Ohio, Aug 3d, 1836. Always preferring the frontier he moved to Indiana, located near Michigan city. In less than a year he moved from there to Winnebago county, Illinois, when that part of Illinois was in its infancy. Then he located on a farm near what is now the city of Rockford. In 1849 he had another attack of western fever, sold his farm and started for Iowa. He with his family, crossed the Mississippi river January 1st, 1850, located temporarily at Garnaville, Clayton Co., Iowa. In the spring of ’51, he took up a claim three smiles from what is now Decorah. Within the year he sold out the claim and entered 80 acres of land 10 miles east of Decorah where he resided until the spring of 1853, when through the advice and influence of his old time friend, Hon. Samuel Murdock, he was appointed agent to take charge of Fort Atkinson, at that time government property. June 19th, 1852, he took charge of the Fort, since which time he has been a resident of Ft. Atkinson except about two years when he was in the service of his adopted country. Soon after his arrival at the Fort, he was appointed postmaster and was also elected to the office Justice of the Peace which office he held about 20 years. In early days he held the office of town clerk and assessor and took census several times, and was a notary public quite a length of time. He will be remembered by many and especially the early settlers of both Illinois and Iowa as a “friend indeed.” He leaves a wife and five daughters to mourn his loss: Mrs. S.S. Tubbe, of Henry, S.D., Mrs. Samuel Sabin, of Watertown, S.D., Mrs. Cynthie Brace, of Fort Athkinson, Iowa, Mrs. D.L. Howard, of Arcadia, Kansas, and Mrs. W.J. Wood, of Detroit City, Minnesota. -Calmar Courier
