It is not often there is occasion to record the death of one who has passed the age of 100 years and still more rare to be able to say as we can that the faculties of memory and reason, in fact all the senses were well preserved but the single one of sight which can be truthfully said of Mrs. Fiefild{sic} to the very end of her long life. It was a treat to sit beside her and sit beside her{sic} and listen to the many incidents of her long lived life which she seemed to enjoy telling.
The writer of this was a pioneer with her in the township of Freemont in 1855 and lived neighbors there many long years. She was the most patient and self-sacrificing woman I ever knew. Coming from a home in Vermont that was comfortable if not luxurious, she came to a new country, sharing its privations and hardships with remarkable patience and fortitude.
The early life was one of struggle with poverty, sickness and death of her loved ones, but her cheerfulness surmounted every trial and to this may be attributed her long life. Her last years were attended by every comfort which the loving care of her son W. C. Fifield and wife and grandchildren, and it is a comfort for them to remember that her every wish that could be was gratified. Her sufferings at times during the last years were intense but she never repined or murmured but was glad when the last summons came and she fell peacefully asleep in Jesus whom she had faithfully followed so many years.
Mrs. Fifield was born on Aug. 30, 1815, at East Poultney, Vermont, where she lived with her parents until March 4, 1834, when she united in marriage to William Fifield of that place. Three children were born to them, Don Henry, Juliette and William Clinton Fifield.
In the year 1855 Mr. and Mrs. Fifield decided to “go west” and settled on the farm in Fremont township. Her husband died Aug. 2, 1890, and until the time of her death she made her home with W. C. Fifield her only living child and who still lives on the old farm.
