Julian Lloyd Quandahl, age 85, passed away January 18, 2020. Julian was born October 9, 1934 in Decorah, Iowa. His parents were Lloyd and Johanna (Blegen) Quandahl. When Julian was nineteen, his mother married Carl Myrah of Decorah, who Julian would be close to his remaining life.

Julian graduated from Decorah High School in 1952, and shortly after joined the U.S. Navy as an Aviation Electronic Technician. He was stationed in San Diego, CA, and deployed aboard USS Kearsarge, CV-33. In 1954, he met Marilyn Rigstad of Detroit, MI. They married in 1956 and returned to the Detroit area after his discharge. In 1957 they bought a new home in Westland, MI, where they lived the rest of Julian’s life.

Julian graduated from Lawrence Institute of Technology, and worked at Burroughs/Unisys Corporation out of Detroit, and later, Plymouth, MI until his retirement in 1991. He spent a significant portion of his work career working on the quality assurance of the check sorting machines the company manufactured. His meticulous mind was perfect for this sort of a work career.

Julian and Marilyn raised three children: Shelly (Mark) Bone, Michael (Cynthia) Quandahl, and Robert (Lorrie) Quandahl. They were blessed with 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Julian was a quiet man. Always organized and prepared, his workshop might not have been the largest around, but it shined, and was as organized as a surgical suite. He used his love of woodworking to make a wide variety of projects, some he blessed his family with, and others he sold. From small trinkets, to dressers and other furniture, it was all beautiful, and very well sanded.

A second love of Julian’s was camping. Julian and Marilyn were long-time members of the Starcraft Camper Club, joining in 1972. Either a weekend getaway, or a week’s long journey to the club’s annual national campout, they were always all well organized and relaxing time. Camping along the river in Algonac was a special favorite place to hang out and watch the ships sail past.

Other loves Julian would claim would be a good glass of scotch, a beautiful lawn, and Annie’s Family Restaurant in Livonia.

Julian was a long time member of Timothy Lutheran Church in Livonia. Julian’s love of his church family shined through in the many projects and leadership roles he became involved with. Building book shelves, serving on church council, serving as an usher, and providing for fellowship are just a few of the ways Julian’s faith journey came to life at Timothy. Always being well dressed and exhibiting proper stature were hallmarks of his stalwart presence.
