Sandra (Sandy) Van Wey, 70, of Decorah, passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2021.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2021 at Frankville Community Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Matt Larson officiating. Burial will be in Frankville Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Tuesday beginning at 10:00 a.m., one hour before the service, at Frankville Presbyterian Church.

Sandy was born May 25, 1950 to John and Irma (Hesse) Van Wey in Postville, Iowa. After graduating from Postville High School in 1968 she lived in Cedar Rapids and worked at the Wilson Meat Packing Plant. In 1971 she married Leo Bodensteiner. Together they had two children, Rhonda Bush and Annette Bjork and resided in Frankville and Castalia. After their divorce in 1979, Sandy lived and worked in Waukon with her young daughters. She worked at the Veteran’s Memorial Hospital as a housekeeper and bartended to provide for her girls. In 1985 she moved to Decorah where she raised her daughters and worked at Ronnie’s Café as a waitress, Camcar-Textron and later Wapsie Produce until they closed in 2010.

In her young adult years she enjoyed spending time with her parents, getting together with her friends and family for backyard gatherings, boating on the river, playing cards and dancing at Matter’s Ballroom.

After Sandy retired, she enjoyed spending her time working in various puzzle books, writing, spending time with her daughters and grandchildren, watching television, playing Monopoly Deal and donating to various charities and pantries in any way she could. She found great joy in helping those in need and expressing her faith and love of God. One of her strongest wishes was for as many of her belongings to go to area churches that provide the items free of charge to those in need. A few years ago she worked with a church in Waukon and donated all of her dress clothes for an event they held to provide people with clothes, free of charge, needed for events, job interviews and just everyday use. She was a giver and faith driven at her core.

Sandy was a strong, hardworking woman with a deep connection to her faith. She put her all into everything she did and gave selflessly. Her pride and joy was her daughters and grandchildren.

Sandy is survived by her daughters, Rhonda (Richard) Bush of Ft. Worth, TX, Annette (Jason) Bjork of Decorah, IA four grandchildren, Victoria Bush, Jacob Bush, Ashley Bjork and Kaitlyn Bjork, siblings Donna Cannon, Robert Van Wey, Clarence Van Wey, and Donald Van Wey and eleven nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John and Irma (Hesse) Van Wey, brothers, Jimmy Van Wey, Richard Van Wey and Art Van Wey, niece Chris Cannon and nephew Scott Van Wey.

In lieu of flowers, Sandy and the family would like donations given to the Paralyzed Veterans of America. Donations can be made by going to https://pva.org or mailing to Paralyzed Veterans of America, PO Box 758521, Topeka, KS 66675-9944.
