DIED.
McKAY—At her residence in this city, on the evening of the 12th, of heart failure. Mrs. ELIZABETH MCKAY, widow of John McKay, aged 58 years.
This was a sudden and imperative call. Deceased was in usual health, and had returned in the afternoon from a visit to LeRoy. She was not quite well, but it seemed only a little temporary illness such as she had often had and speedily recovered from. She rallied, as she expected, and was enough botty so that her daughter, Miss May, went out to pay a necessary visit, promising to return before 7:30 o’clock. During her absence a neighbor. Miss Nora Riley, called and found her ill. Another neighbor, Mrs. Schenck, dropped in, and she grew worse and finally assented to calling aid. Dr. Cartright and Dr. Barfoot were summoned, and when they arrived she was evidently past all aid. She passed away at about 7:30 o'clock, just after the return home of her daughter, whom she recognized but could not speak to.
Elizabeth Rathbun was born in Geneseo, N. Y. February 16, 1837, and came to Iowa in 1852. When sixteen years old she married Mr. John McKay, who, in early days was one of the most prominent men in the county. To them nine children were born, four of whom survive. These are Mrs. Dr. Wilcox, of Frankville, Mrs. John S. Williams, of Washington Prairie. Jos. H. McKay, who lives on the home farm in Frankville township, and Miss May, with whom deceased came to Decorah to live two years ago.
