Michael R. Zweibohmer, 72, of Decorah, Iowa died Friday, March 19, 2021 at VA Medical Center, Iowa City, Iowa, with his family by his side. Michael Raymond, the son of Arthur and Patricia (Lewis) Zweibohmer, was born March 15, 1949 in Decorah, Iowa. Mike was baptized and confirmed at St. Francis DeSales Catholic Church in Ossian and attended St. Francis DeSales school. Mike Graduated from DeSales High School in 1967.
During his high school years Mike worked at Chuck’s Standard Station in Ossian and also worked during the summers with his dad at Reilly Construction Company. After graduation from high school, he was employed by Wilson Packing Company in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and was drafted into the United States Army in 1969. He bravely fought in the Vietnam conflict and was awarded a Purple Heart. After his discharge from the Army, Mike enrolled in the business program at Northeast Iowa Technical Institute, Calmar, Iowa. Mike was General Manager at Shumski’s Floor Covering in Charles City, Iowa in 1977 prior to returning to Decorah. In 1987, Mike, and his business partner Dale Lundy, founded Fashion Floor Center in Decorah, Iowa.
Mike was a member St. Benedicts Catholic Church in Decorah, Iowa. He enjoyed fishing, racing, cars, spending time with his family, and occasionally tried enjoying golf. Mike very much looked forward to his reunions with his 101st Airborne Brothers. He was a strong, caring, and dependable man and will be dearly missed by his family as well as Dixie, his constant companion and “The World’s Best Dog”.
Mike is survived by his four children, Matt (Kassia) Zweibohmer, Shelley (Matt) Bigler, Mick Zweibohmer, Mitchel “Bill” (Tiffany) Zweibohmer; nine grandchildren, Grace and Raymond Zweibohmer, Ryan and Allison Bigler, Janessa and Mason Zweibohmer, and Seth, Ashley, and Ivan Zweibohmer; Siblings, Kathy (John) Barnhart, Mark (Gail) Zweibohmer, Carol (Laverne) Meyer, and sister-in-law Jude Zweibohmer.
Mike was preceded in death by his stillborn infant twins, his brother Jerry Zweibohmer, and his parents Patricia and Arthur Zweibohmer.
Visitation will be held from 4 pm to 7 pm with a 6:30 pm Rosary and Scripture Service on Thursday, March 25, 2021 at Schmitz-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Ossian, Iowa. There will also be a one hour visitation before Mass at the church on Friday.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, March 26, 2021 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church with Rev. Donald Hertges as the celebrant.
Burial with Military Honors will follow at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Cemetery in Ossian, Iowa.
