Daniel J. Fossum, age 45, formerly of Decorah, passed away peacefully on March 2, 2021, at his home in Baxter, Minn., after a two-year battle with cancer, with his loving partner Rachel by his side.

Dan was born Sept. 13, 1975, in Decorah to Verdell C. and Lenora R. (Mann) Fossum. He attended Decorah Community Schools, and graduated with the Class of 1994

He participated in basketball, football and tennis. He became a very accomplished alpine skier and golfer.

He worked at Pizza Hut in Decorah for 15 years, where he met his partner, Rachel Barness. He and Rachel spent the next 17 years together until his death. After leaving Decorah, he worked at golf courses in Wisconsin and Illinois, ending up as assistant golf pro at Cragun’s Legacy Golf Course in Brainerd Lakes area.

He is survived by his partner, Rachel Barness in Baxter, Minn.; his father, Verdell Fossum; a brother, A. Jay (Joan) Fossum; parents-in-law, Jerry (Vikki) Barness; sister-in-law, Jessica (John Murray) Barness; brothers-in-law: Brent (Michelle) Barness and Adam (Heather) Barness; nephews: Emmett, Hudson and Benjamin; nieces: Norah and Aida; and many loving lifelong friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Lenora Fossum; and by his grandparents, William and Inez Fossum and Leonard and Virginia Mann.

A celebration of life will be scheduled for late spring or early summer in Decorah.
