DIED.
SIMMONS—In West Decorah, Thursday, June 20th.at the residence of her mother Mrs. Kelley, Mrs. Jennie Simmons, aged 30 years.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church, of this city. Monday, June 24th, Rev, Dyk, pastor of the West Union Presbyterian Church, preached the sermon.
Jennie H. Kelley-Simmons was born in Sextonville. Richland Co.. Wis., Feb. 8, 1865, came to Decorah with her parents in September of the same year, and resided here up to the time of her marriage.
She graduated from the Winnesheik County Normal Institute in April, 1887, and became one of the county's best teachers, being for some time principal of the West Decorah public school.
Nov. 6, 1887, she united with the First Congregational Church, of Decorah, and joined by letter the Bethel Presbyterian Church, of West Union, in March, l893. She was an active worker in Sabbath School and Christian Endeavor society of both places. She was a charter member, of Decorah Chapter of Eastern Star. After moving to West Union she transferred her membership to the chapter of that place. She also became a member of the Daughters of Rebecca. These societies claimed her as a faithful, earnest worker.
She was married Oct. 26th, 1892, to Dr. W. H. Simmons, of Viola. Wis., and has since made her home in West Union. On account of failing health she was brought to her mother on May 11th, where she died June 20th. She leaves a husband, an infant son, mother, sister and brother to mourn her loss, and in her death the entire community feels that they have been bereaved.Transcriber’s Note: Her gravestone in Phelps Cemetery shows she was born in 1860.
