A Desperate Act.
OELWEIN, April 5th.—Elmer Baker, who was in the employ of P. J. James, a wealthy farmer residing about ten miles southeast of Oelwein, while working out in the field sinking a large rook, met a horrible death yesterday. After making a large excavation about nine feet deep, the rock fell in, catching Baker about the hip bones. As he was alone he could not remove the rock. After remaining this way about two or three hours he became desperate, took an old jack knife from his pocket and stabbed himself in the throat until he severed the windpipe. He lived about twenty minutes after being found. He leaves a wife and two children.
