Mrs. Brayton Whitney died at her home in Hesper township on Friday last, aged 62 years and 17 days, and was buried on Sunday last. Martha Rockwood was born in Brownsville, Jefferson Co., N. Y., in November, 1834, and was united in marriage in December, 1853, to Brayton Whitney. In 1856 they came west, located first in Watertown, Wis. In 1867 they came to Iowa, and occupied the farm home in Hesper that was one of the happiest until death entered it in 1892 and took away the head and father. Though a sufferer from that dreaded disease, consumption, she was not confined to her bed until two days before her death. She was the mother of seven children. A daughter in 1882, preceded the parents to the spirit land, and last summer a beloved son, Claude, was taken. Five remain, viz:—L. B. Whitney, P. H. Whitney, Mrs. Clara Benedict, of New Castle, Neb., M. D. Whitney and Mrs. Cora Darling, to mourn the loss of one who was all that a mother could be to them. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the M. E. church in Burr Oak, the pastor, Rev. J. Hilburn, officiating, assisted by Eld. J. Ridley. Deceased was a kind and sympathetic neighbor and friend, whose death will be deeply lamented by all. The beautiful floral offerings and the grave, so handsomely lined with evergreens, were silent testimonials of general respect and love.
