MRS. C.W. BURDICK.
Died at her home in West Decorah, Monday evening, Oct. 9th, Mrs. Charles W. Burdick, aged 48 years.
After a brave, but fruitless, struggle for nearly two years, another victim is conquered by that insidious enemy, consumption. Born in Homer Mich., Oct. 31st, 1845, Violetta E. McMurtrie came to Decorah, with her mother, in November, 1858. As she was just past thirteen years of age, all her formative, active and useful years have been spent in this community. February 20th, 1867, she married to C.W. Burdick, giving them twenty-six and one-half happy years. She was the mother of two daughters, the youngest of whom preceded her to the spirit land, only within the past year.
Mrs. Burdick’s illness dates back nearly two years. Last winter was spent in the south in hopes that a milder climate would prove restorative; but she returned home in the late spring not improved, and with evidence that disease had taken a fast hold upon her constitution. Only during the past month has she been confined to her bed. Her virtues were those of the faithful wife and mother – the warm friend and good neighbor.
Funeral services were held at the family residence yesterday afternoon, Rev. H.H. Green officiating, assisted by a quartette choir consisting of Misses Auchmoody and Wagar, and Messrs. Adams and Holverson. The bearers were Messrs. Gardner, Cadwell, Grow, Leonard, Bailer and L. W. Beard.
Transcriber’s Note: Find a grave shows she is buried at Phelps Cemetery but the name on her gravestone is difficult to read.
