Death of an Old-Timer.
J. D. Jenkins, who was register of the U. S. Land Office in Decorah, in the winter of 1855-6, died at Wilmot, S. D., on the 20th ult., at the age of 77 years. A brief summary of his life gives these facts:—
He was a prominent figure in western life. He served in the Black Hawk war in 1832. In 1837 he was appointed United States marshal for the territory of Wisconsin. During 1847-48 he was a member of the legislature of Wisconsin from Iowa county. In 1852 he crossed the plains to California, where he was appointed surveyor by the goverment. In the spring of 1854 he moved to Lansing, Iowa. In 1855 he was appointed United States register of the Turkey river land office, at Decorah, Iowa. In 1895 he came to Dakota, and in 1886 was appointed Indian agent, in charge of the Sisseton agency, which position he held for three years.
