MRS. SOPHIA HOFFSTROM.
On Saturday last at the noon hour, Mrs. Sophia Hoffstrom, mother of Mrs. B. Anundsen died suddenly at the home of her son-in-law. During a number of years she had been a semi-invalid, but the week previous to her death enjoyed exceptionally good health and seemed much stronger. On Saturday, dinner had just been served and Mrs. Hoffstrom had been called from her room to join the family. Less than a minute afterward Miss Tillie Anundsen passed out into the hall and found her lying on the floor. She had evidently stopped at a stand to get something from one of the drawers when she was stricken with appoplexy and death resulted immediately as medical examination afterward revealed.
Mrs. Hoffstrom was born in Sweden, Nov. 22d, 1811, and was married at the age of seventeen. Her husband was a colonel in the Swedish army and died in 1847, leaving his widow in destitute circumstances with six young children to provide for. In 1850 she came to America. She was a woman greatly interested in church work, and whereever she could do a kindly act to a needy friend or neighbor it was a pleasure to perform the service. During the war she was a patriot of the Union forces and spent two years at Louisville, Ky. as nurse in the hospital. Most of the past thirty years she has lived with her daughter, Mrs. Anundsen. Two other daughters, Mrs. Marcus Anderson, of La Crosse, and Mrs. O. F. Cowhick, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, and one son, Ludwig Hoffstrom, of Napa, Cal., survive her. The funeral will be hold to-day at 2 o’clock p. m. at the United Lutheran church and the remains will be buried in the Norwegian Cemetery.
