GROUT COLEMAN.
Elsewhere in these columns is recorded the “calling home,” on Friday last, of Mrs. Jane Grout Coleman, widow of the late Dr. W. F. Coleman, after a painful illness of several weeks.
Jane Grout was born at New Market, Ontario, Canada, June 12th, 1829, where she resided until twelve years of age. With her parents she moved to McHenry Co., Ill. and at Woodstock, where, in 1848, she was married to Dr. Coleman. There they continued to reside until the fall of 1857, when they came to Decorah, and this has since been the family home.
In 1867 Mrs. Coleman united by profession of faith with the Congregational church and has always maintained tier allegiance thereto. For years she had been unable to take an active part in church work owing to enfeebled health; but it was in the home, at her fireside, that the motherly christian spirit which guided her life shone the brightest. Of a family of nine children and a husband, six children remain to mourn her loss. These are Mrs. W. R. Toye, Miss At a{?} Coleman and Dr. W. F. Coleman, Jr., of Decorah, F. M. Coleman, who resides in Kansas, H. H. Coleman, of Minneapolis, and Dr. L. P. Coleman, of Eagle Grove. Except. F. M. Coleman all of the children were present at the funeral. The husband died in 1886; Harrick, the oldest son, died in 1893; Dell, the youngest son, was the only victim of the Luther College fire in 1889, and one daughter, Cora, died when a young girl.
The funeral services were held at the house Sunday afternoon at three o’clock, Rev. D L. Hilliard officiating. He took as his text the 23d Psalm, which Mrs. Coleman recited before her death. An unusually large number of old citizens were present to attest their respect for the deceased. The remains were interred in the Decorah cemetery, Messrs. N. H. Adams, J. T. Relf, E. J. Riley, F. S. Landers, E. L. Beard and O. T. Hamre acting as pall bearers.
Thus is recorded all that was mortal of another of Decorah’s old residents— a good mother, a Christian woman, and withal an invalid for years who bore her sufferings with patience, as a recognition that it was God's will.

Transcriber's Note: Her husband is buried in Phelps Cemetery but I can't find any evidence of where she is buried, either in Phelps Cemetery records or Find a Grave.
