DR. WM. PARLIMAN.
Last evening at 6 o’clock this venerable and esteemed citizen died at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. C. Day.
Dr. Parliman was born in New York State, Feb. l6th, 1803, and had attained the rare old age of 93 years. And they have been years of unusual mental and physical vigor and activity.
Soon after graduating in medicine he moved to Ohio (in 1827,) where he resided and practiced his profession for thirty years, or until he came to Decorah, where he has lived since 1857. His wife was Maria Winfield, who died in 1875. The children who survive him are Edward, of Sioux Falls, William, also a resident of South Dakota, and Mrs. Claiborne Day. One daughter, the second child, died in Ohio, and a son (Theodore) died in Decorah, years ago.
In early life he was a member of the Methodist church and quite active in its duties. Although he never united with a church in Decorah he never abandoned his early training, and was as long as he was able accustomed to regular church going. He began life as a Democrat, but separated from that party because of the differences which now divide the two great parties. He believed thoroughly in the doctrine of protection of American industries, and he followed principle rather than party. This led him first to the Republican party, of which he was always a steadfast and thoroughly intelligent advocate. Whatever he believed was believed most intensely. There never was doubt nor uncertainty as to his opinions; and as he possessed a strong, active mind, backed by a powerful memory and more than ordinary felicity of expression he was an advocate to be desired for any party that he espoused. Though a strong party man he never yielded to the seductions of office except as they came in line with his life occupation. For about fifteen years Dr. Parliman was a member of the Decorah pension board, and for a brief time he served his ward in the city council.
Funeral services will be held at the residence of C. Day to-morrow (Friday) forenoon at 10 o’clock. The burial will be private.
