TODD – At his late residence in Winneshiek county, five miles north east of Kendallville, on Sunday afternoon, August 13, 1893, at 4 o’clock, after a lingering illness of consumption, Christopher Todd, aged 63 years.

The deceased was born July 16, 1830, in County Armagh, Ireland, being one of a family of five brothers and two sisters, all of whom emigrated to America, and all but two of the number settling in Winneshiek county. Mr. Todd came to the United States in 1851, remaining a few years at Elgin, Illinois, where he united with the Methodist church. In 1855 he came to Iowa, taking as a homestead the farm on which he was to spend thirty five years of his life. In 1862, he enlisted in the 38th Iowa Co. D. serving until the regiment was mustered out in 1865. He came home with health badly broken. He had been slowly failing for sometime previous to the end. An attack of the grip ended in consumption. He retained consciousness to the last and gave full directions as to the funeral and other matters. His end was peace.

Feb. 7, 1866, he was married; his wife preceding him to the Heavenly home June 25th of the present year. Of their three children, one daughter, Ella, survives.

The funeral services were held at the family residence on Tuesday morning Aug., 15th under the directions of Rev. James Oakey of the Congregational church, Cresco. There was an unusually large number of relatives and friends in attendance. Memorial Post G.A.R., of Cresco was present in force and took charge on leaving the house. Appropriate hymns were sung at the house and the grave by a quartette of the Cresco Congregational choir.

At the cemetery the ritual of the G.A.R., was given by Commander P.C. Howe and Chaplain Frank Richards.

Thus another of the early settles of our state passes away, leaving his memory as a precious legacy to his daughter and to the country of which he was a faithful citizen and loyal defender. The daughter has the sincere sympathy of a large circle of relatives and friends in her double bereavement. – Cresco Republican
