SUICIDE AT OSSIAN.

Mrs. Sawyer, the widow of Nelson Sawyer, the Ossian furniture merchant who died some time ago, committed suicide by hanging in her own cellar last Friday morning. She had been somewhat unsettled mentally for some time but no one thought of such a termination. She was a lady who was universally respected and esteemed by all who knew her. We had the pleasure of meeting her in her own home a few years ago, having been invited to dinner by Mr. Sawyer. We have often thought since that we never saw a home presided over with more grace and dignity and at the same time more cordial hospitality than hers. We can but grieve that such a grand woman should be thus prematurely cut off from a world which she was so well fitted to adorn. May her rest be peaceful.

OBITUARY.
Mrs. F. D Sawyer.
One of the largest funeral assemblies that ever met in Ossian, gathered at the house of Mrs. F.D. Sawyer, who died Aug. 18th. A special car from Decorah brought about fifty persons mostly members of the W.R.C. and the Eastern Star lodge. Both societies brought with them many very beautiful flower pieces as a token of their love and esteem, Mrs. Sawyer being an honored member of both societies. Large numbers came from Castalia, Frankville, Calmar and all the surrounding country.

She was known far and near. The young and old alike went to her for counsel and advice, and none were turned away without some word of sympathy or encouragement. Her heart and hands were always open to relieve any one in trouble. Was any one sick, she was there to help in every way possible. The poor and needy found in her sympathy and relief. In every benevolent enterprise she was the first one sought to give it support. “None know her but to love her.”

Thus has passed away one whose memory will be cherished for years to come.

At the close of the service which was held at the house, the W.R.C. placed their tribute of flowers on the casket. The body was then borne to the grave attended by the Eastern Star lodge, where their very beautiful impressive service closed the ceremonies.

Mrs. Sawyer was born in Fulton, Rock Co., Wis., March 3rd, 1841, and was married Nov. 7th, 1858, to Mr. R.N. Sawyer, at Harmony, Rock Co., Wis. Shortly after their marriage they came to Ossian. Mr. Sawyer died Feb. 5th, 1889. Mrs. Sawyer died at the age of 52 years, 5 months and 16 days. She leaves one sister, Mrs. A.B. Lord, of Chicago, and an aged mother to mourn her loss.

Melancholy Ending to a Beautiful Life.

The intensely painful intelligence was received in this city last Friday that Mrs. R.N. Sawyer of Ossian, had released herself from the worries and troubles of this life. The paritculars, as near as we can glean them, are: –She has been ill for several weeks, and the financial troubles of the times had so preyed upon her mind that she became despondent – we might say unbalanced – upon this subject, and fancied she would either end in the poor house or become dependent upon her relatives. Early last Friday morning she dressed and informed Mrs. Dr. Pegg, with whom she was staying, that she was going over to Mr. Carter’s and would be back in a few minutes. Mrs. Pegg dressed hurriedly and went over to Mr. Carter’s to accompany Mrs. Sawyer home, but she had not been there. Inquire resulted in the information that she was seen going to her own home. Mrs. Pegg went there but could not get in. Securing the assistance of one of the Oxleys she again tried to get in, but could not. Going around the house they found the cellar door open, and in the cellar they found Mrs. Sawyer hanging. The REPUBLICAN records this history with the deepest sorrow. It will not believe that this sad termination of so good a life was the acct of the well-balanced, cheerful mind which commanded the esteem – nay the warm friendship – of all who knew her.
