COLEMAN – At the residence of his mother in this city, Sunday night, of liver complaint, John Herrick Coleman, in his 44th year.

Mr. Coleman was the oldest son of Dr. and Mrs. W.F. Coleman, and was born in LeMars, July 19th, 1849. He came to Decorah with his parents in 1857, and here he has always made his home. He chose as an occupation that of the engineer, but his love for Decorah and home was such that he never attempted to follow the vocation except as he was offered employment of that sort in Decorah. During the past two years he has been in the employ of the city in the care of street lighting, etc., and he proved himself to be one of the most faithful, painstaking men the city has ever employed in that capacity. For years he was in the fire department, being one of the very early members of the first company, Rescue No. 1, in the days of the old Babcock.

During the past winter he contracted a severe cold which later turned into liver complaint. Just a month ago he was taken home in an unconscious condition from which he never rallied.

His mother, two sisters and four brothers survive him, all of whom, except his brother Frank, being present at his funeral. The services were held at the residence, Tuesday afternoon, at three o’clock, Rev. Henry Grant officiating. They were quite largely attended, the larger part of the fire department being present in uniform. The family wish to extend their sincere thanks to friends who so kindly tendered their sympathy and aid during the illness and death of deceased.
