DEATH OF A. H. OXLEY.
Caught Between two Cars at Lincoln, Nebraska.
Ossian Bee, Dec. 9th.
We take the following, relating to the death of A H (better known as “Jake’’) Oxley, at Lincoln, Nebraska, last Sunday, from the Nebraska State Journal:
A. H Oxley, a switchman in the Burlington yards, received injuries yesterday morning while preparing to make a coupling which culminated in his death a few hours later. His remains were taken to Walton Roberts’ undertaking rooms where an inquest will be hold this morning by Coroner Holyoke.
Mr. Oxley was switching some cars in the now freight yards, north of the Burlington freight house yesterday morning at {?} o’clock, it is supposed from what can be learned that he was fixing a coupler, while the train was backing up, to couple to some cars which were standing still. The two drawheads struck him in the region of the hips and injuries were inflicted which afterwards proved fatal.
Mr. Oxley came to this city and went to work for the Burlington in September. He was twenty-five years of age. His home is in Burr Oak, Iowa, and his parents were immediately notified. A message was received last night from his father, saying he would arrive to-day and take the remains back for burial.— Nebraska State Journal, Monday, Nov. 29, 1S97.
The following is the proceedings of the inquest which was held Monday forenoon:
In the case of A. H. Oxley, the jury found that the deceased had come to his death through his own carelessness. Foreman Hansen and Switchman Mowbray, who constituted a part of the crew in which Oxley was working, testified that no blame could be attached to anyone except the unfortunate man himself. They stated that he did not set the brakes securely when the cars were backed in and placed along the platform to be unloaded later. Had he done so they would not have run down and have caught him between them. According to their story the first string was pushed down beside the platform. Oxley, after setting the brakes on them insecurely, as was afterwards demonstrated, got down and was taking a link out of a Janney coupling on another car on the same track when the first string ran down upon him, catching him between the drawbars, which struck him at the base of the abdomen. One of the links was driven through him. When the slack that naturally followed the collision came, he was picked up and carried to the freight house He was conscious until a short time before he died and stated that his in-juries were the result of his own carelessness.— Nebraska State Journal, Nov. 30, 1997.
The remains of A. H. Oxley arrived here (Ossian) last Thursday morning on the four o’clock train, accompanied by his father and an uncle, M. Williams, of Weeping Water, Neb. The funeral was held at the Centennial church on Thursday forenoon at 11 o’clock, Rev. J. Q Dickensheets officiating. The deceased was born in Bloomfield township, in 1872, being 25 years of age. He was an open hearted man and will be greatly missed by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. He leaves a father, mother, one brother and two sisters to mourn his untimely and sudden death.
