Ralph P., son of Julian T. and Nellie P. Blackburn, was born at Emory, S. D., on August 28th, 1884, and died at Des Moines, Iowa, November 16th, 1897, of heart trouble, the result of former severe attacks of inflammatory rheumatism. The remains were brought to Hesper for burial, and the funeral services were held in the Methodist church on the 19th, Rev. Hilburn preaching a very comforting sermon from John 14.1. The day after Ralph died, the desk which he occupied in school was strewn with flowers, and afterward the teachers and pupils of the school which he had attended went to the house and covered the casket with beautiful roses, floral tributes were sent also by Mrs. McFarlane, of Des Moines, and by friends near and far. Ralph had a winsome way which one could not resist, and which won him many friends. Though very fond of active outdoor life he was a natural student, with a mind far in advance of his years, fond of studying the deep things of nature and of the Bible, whoso truths he loved. It seems sad and unexplainable when one so young and so full of promise is taken, but “Some day, some time we’ll understand,” “When the mists have rolled away.” Let us feel that in passing on this young life, there is one more flawless link added to the chain which binds us to, and will eventually draw us to the “Home of the blest.” Mr. and Mrs. Blackburn, who returned to Des Moines on the 23d, wish to express to their friends their appreciation of the many kindnesses and the sympathy extended to them in their bereavement
