WALTER F. GAGER.
Born and Died in Orleans Township. —In his 31st year.
Said one who had known him all his life, to this writer, “Walter Gager was the finest young man in Orleans township." To Rev. F. P. Shaffer, of Cresco, who, in the sickness of the pastor of deceased,—Rev. Eberhard, of Ridgeway, officiated at the funeral,—we are indebted for the following sketch of Mr. Gager’s life:
Walter F. Gager, son of Nelson and Mary F. Gager, was born in Orleans township, Feb. 15, 1866, and died Nov. 10, 1897, aged 30 years and 9 months.
He was converted to Christ, united with the Methodist Episcopal church in 1892 and continued as a faithful member of the church until his decease. Bro. Gager was the efficient Sunday School Superintendent, and president of the Epworth League Chapter of the Morgan Methodist church. During his sickness—which was of but three days’ duration—his thoughts were about the Sunday School and League. He exhorted the friends and members not to allow the interest to die out, but to keep them going. He gave the assurance to his loved ones that it was all well with him, that he was ready to live or die, as seemed best to God.
He was one of a family of nine children, and the third to pass away. A sister died in childhood, and another sister died of diphtheria at Webster City, about two months ago. His parents and five brothers and one sister are still among us, awaiting the sum-mons of our Heavenly Father.
The funeral was held at the Morgan church, on Friday last, and was attended by a large congregation of sorrowing friends and neighbors. Rev. F. P. Shaffer, of Cresco, preached from the text “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord,” &c.
All that was mortal of this good man was laid to rest in Oak Lawn Cemetery, Cresco, Io.
