Peter H. Mills – Died at Minneapolis, June 16th; burried at Ossian last Monday. Peter H. Mills was born in Orange Co., NY, October 4, 1825. Coming west when a young man, he located at Whitewater, Wisconsin, where he resided until 1864, when he removed to Ossian. In 1854 he was married to Sarah Elmina Jennings, who survives him. Two sons were born to bless their union, the elder of whom, Charles J., is engaged in the drug business at Ossian, and the youngest, Frank H., is station agent of the C.M. & St. P. RR at Graceville, Minnesota.

Mr. Mills was long identified with the firm of Bassett, Hunting & Co. of McGregor, and for many years was one of Ossian’s leading grain dealers. In 1873 he was appointed postmaster at Ossian, an office which he held until April 1, 1886. In August 1885, he went to Dakota, where he was actively engaged in the grain and produce business until quite recently, when he returned to Ossian for a few weeks’ recreation. On the 5th inst. He formed a co-partnership with William S. Gregory, a merchant tailor and established an extensive clothing establishment in Minneapolis, MN, where, after a brief residence, he was stricken with peritonitis and died June 16, 1893.

The funeral services were held at All Soul’s Chapel in Ossian, Monday, June 18th, under the auspices of the Masonic fraternity, of which the deceased was a member, Reverend H. Lewellen conducting the obsequies. The remains were then conveyed to the M.E. cemetery for internment, and a large concurse of people were in attendance to pay the last tribute to the memory of their departed friend.
