OBITUARY.
ARTHUR G. HITCHCOCK died at his home in West Decorah on Sunday evening, aged nearly 63 years.
He was born in Broome county, N. Y., Sept, 11th, 1834, and came west as a lad with his parents in 1845, who settled in McHenry Co., Ill.
In 1855 the family removed to Iowa and settled in Burr Oak township, this county. In 1861 he enlisted in Co. B, Wisconsin volunteer infantry, and proved himself a worthy soldier. At the close of the war he came to Iowa, and settled in Burr Oak township. In the fall of 1873 he came to Decorah, where he has since resided, and worked at his trade of carpenter and joiner. For a year past he had been in failing health from what at its termination was recognized by his physicians as Bright’s disease, but he was seriously ill for only a month preceding his death, and to many of his acquaintances the event came suddenly and unexpectedly.
Mr. Hitchcock was married after the close of the war to Miss Smith, of Burr Oak township and to them five children were born; four of them, with the wife and mother, survive him, viz: Harold, a son residing in Minneapolis, Mrs. Hallie Marsh and Misses Carrie and Bessie, all of whom are living in Decorah.
Funeral services were held at the home yesterday afternoon, Rev. A. G. Wilson officiating, and burial took place in the Montgomery cemetery.
