OBITUARY.
Walter A. Smith was born in England, October 29th, 1833, came to America upon arriving at man’s estate, and late in the fifties came to Iowa. In 1860 he was married to Samantha Hazel and they settled upon the farm about three miles south of Hesper, where they have ever since made their home. He, after a long and tedious illness, passed away on May 13th, 1897, leaving the wife of his youth, five daughters and three sons, bereft of a kind and indulgent father and a loving husband. Mr. Smith never aspired to political honors, even in a small way, but for many years held a position on the board of directors in his school district, and that he was appreciated was indicated by the fact that every family in the district was represented at the funeral. He made the “Golden Rule” the guide of his life and for several years had been a member of the Advent Christian church, in which he was an official member. The funeral services were held in the Friend’s church, on the 16th, Elder J. Ridley, of Burr Oak, preaching the sermon.
