Douglas Dickman, 81, of Decorah, returned to his heavenly home Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2020, at Wellington Place in Decorah.

No formal services will be held at this time due to COVID-19 restrictions.

A celebration of life gathering may be planned in the spring.Sympathy cards can be sent to Ellen Dickman at 848 Ravoux Circle, Chaska, MN 55318.Douglas Dale Dickman was born Oct. 7, 1939, to Edward and Lucy (Dull) Dickman on a farm in Frankville Township, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Washington Prairie Lutheran Church. Doug attended Bakke Country School and graduated from Decorah High School In 1958. In 1961 he married Ellen Bigler whom he met in high school. The couple were married for 59 years and enjoyed life in the country. They bought a home on 80 acres one mile from the farm where Doug spent his childhood.

Doug held a variety of different jobs including hauling freight coast-to-coast. While working for Holland Brothers Construction he transported heavy equipment in the summer months and did welding repairs in the off-season. He also fabricated special needs tools/equipment for Holland Brothers. Doug loved his gardening and growing his own food. He loved sharing his fruits and veggies with friends, neighbors and anyone in need. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. In his later years, Doug mostly pursued deer and turkeys. He loved kids and was always eager to offer a helping hand to those in need. He was quick with a joke so you needed to be on your toes when he was around. He had a big smile and contagious laugh.

Doug is survived by his wife Ellen; son Dan (Sharon) Dickman of Minot, N. D.; daughter Stacey (Paul) Kairu of Chaska, Minn.; grandchildren Jamie (Judith) Dickman of Minot, N.D., Nicole (Dickman) Trottier of Great Falls, Mont., Leah Dickman of Minot, N.D., and Natalie Kairu of Chaska, Minn.; great-grandchildren Joseph, James, Judah and John; and sister-in-law, Darlene Dickman. Doug was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Lucy (Dull) Dickman; sister, Lillian Dickman; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Elmer and Tilvina Bigler; brothers, Edward (Bev) Dickman and Norman Dickman; and great-granddaughter, Jordan Grace Dickman.
