TWO OLD SETTLERS GONE!
Barney B. Greene Drops in the street and Dies—Jacob Rotnor Passes away.
JACOB ROTNOR.
Another of the pioneers passed away on Sunday last.
Jacob Rotnor came to Iowa in the spring of 1854, and found a piece of government land that suited him on what became section 28 of Canoe township, whereon he has resided over since, or for forty-three years had he lived, until the 15th of May.
Mr. Rotnor was born in Wayne Co., N. Y., Nov. 22d, 1823. There he lived until manhood, when he came west, settled in Elgin, Ill., where he married Miss Jane A. George on the 31st day of August, 1848. One of the desires of Jacob’s later life was that he might live to enjoy the fiftieth anniversary of this event, but he was not so permitted. A couple of years they lived in McHenry Co., Ill., and then came to Iowa, and made a home where there was always contentment, good cheer and a hearty welcome for the guest, especially the belated traveler.
Until lately Mr. Rotnor enjoyed rugged health, but an attack of the grip in the early winter left him enfeebled in body. He was up and about until the 20th ult., when he was compelled to take to his bed, and he passed away in the early morning of Sunday last. Funeral services were held at the homestead on Tuesday, Rev. A. G. Wilson officiating, and the remains were interred in the Russell cemetery in Canoe township. The wife and three children survive him.
