Since the ushering in of the present year we have, each week, been called upon to record the death of an old pioneer, and this week is no exception. As the result of a paralytic stroke sustained Saturday Jan. 23d, Mrs. Salmon{sic} Shroyer passed quietly away at her home, two miles east of here, Saturday morning, at about 10 o’clock. The funeral occurred from the M. E. church Monday at 2 o'clock p. m. the Rev. R. D. McCormack, of Fayette, officiating. A large concourse of neighbors and friends assembled to pay their last respects to the deceased, who was held in high esteem by all who knew her. Early in the fifties Salmon{sic} Shroyer with his family settled in Bloomfield township on the farm where they have continuously resided since. Living on the main road from McGregor to Austin in early days, many can testify to Mr. and Mrs. Shroyer’s hospitality. Many are the times they have shared their log house with families less fortunate. Together they shared the and sorrows incident to pioneer life. By economy and industry accumulated a competence and were permitted to enjoy each others companionship to a ripe old age; Mrs. Shroyer being over 84 years at the time of her death.
Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows her name as Eliza. She was born March 16, 1812 and died Feb. 6, 1897. She is buried in Pleasant View Cemetery. It also shows her husband’s name spelled Solomon.
