PETER McMARTIN.
A Fifth Pioneer Settler in Bloomfield Township Passes Away.
PETER MCMARTIN died at his home Sunday evening, Jan. 31, 1897. He was born in Canada, Dec. 8, 1831; was married to Miss Luncinda{sic} Dean, Sept. 1, 1861. While in church at the Sunday morning services, and while in the attitude of prayer, he was stricken with apoplexy. He was taken at once to Dr. Boon’s office near by and everything possible was done for the sick man, but he did not rally. He was taken to his home in the evening where he lingered until about 9 o’clock when he passed away. The wife and four children, three boys and one girl, survive the husband and father, and all but one were present at the funeral. The funeral was held yesterday (Tuesday) from the U. B. church, Castalia, Rev. Parkin, assisted by Rev. Hartsough and Rev. Harper, officiating before a large concourse of neighbors and friends.
Enticed by the picturesque landscape and fertile soil of eastern Winnesheik county, Mr. McMartin settled here something over forty years ago. Since that time he has been a part of the history of Bloomfield township. He has watched with pride the development of this magnificent agricultural county, from the then almost trackless wilderness. In 1855 he settled on the farm where last Sunday evening he breathed his last.
Mr. McMartin was a devoted member of the M. E. church and one of the most tireless church workers, and will be greatly missed by the members of his church. In 1864 he enlisted in the service of his country and served until 1866, when he was honorably discharged. Members of the G, A. R. with one exception acted as pall bearers.
The month of January was one of the most fatal to old pioneers of Bloomfield township, five having passed away during that month. Thus we are reminded that time is swiftly passing and that these old pioneers will soon have passed away and a new generation will have arisen to take their places.

Transcriber's Note: He is buried in Pleasant View Cemetery. His wife's gravestone shows her name spelled Lucinda.
