OBITUARY.
After many weeks of suffering-, Mrs. Exum Johnson found release at 3 o'clock last Sunday morning. Her maiden name was Lea Freer. She was born in Logan Co., Ohio, Sept. 2, 1836, and here she grew to womanhood. When about 14 years old she was converted and joined the Free Will Baptist church. After coming to Iowa she united with the Friends church. In 1853 Miss Freer became the wife of Exum Johnson, with whom she lived happily some 40 years. They soon left Ohio for Indiana where they lived a few years, returning in 1858. But the tide of immigration was yet westward. Great stories were told of the fertile prairies of Iowa, and they came to this state in the early sixties. For thirty-five years they lived on a farm east of Hesper, but of late her home has been in Decorah.
Afflicted for a number of years, but especially for the last four months, Mrs. Johnson was a great sufferer. But she bore her sickness with great patience. Her trust was in God and she seemed reconciled to his will. A husband, two sons and two daughters remain to mourn her loss.
The funeral was on Tuesday. After a brief service at the home the body was taken to Hesper, where the funeral was held in the Friends church. Rev J. W. Allen, of Decorah, assisted by Dr. Slack, conducted the services. The sermon was preached from I John 5:4, “This Is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.” The floral tributes were tasty and appropriate. A large audience was present and followed the remains to the cemetery, where the burial took place. “Asleep in Jesus; blessed sleep,”

Transcriber’s Note: Her gravestone in Hesper Public Cemetery shows her name as Lenah.
