William “Bill” H. Rude, age 87 of Decorah, IA, died Wednesday, October 7, 2020 at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, WI.Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 16, 2020 at Fjelstul Funeral Home in Decorah. Burial will follow at Canoe Ridge Cemetery in rural Decorah with Rev. Stacey Nalean – Carlson officiating. Military Honors will be provided by Decorah’s Veterans and Military Organizations, and U.S. Army personnel.
In consideration of concerns regarding Covid-19 and our city mandate, social distancing and face masks or shields are required to attend.
William “Bill” Henry Rude was born on September 7, 1933 at his aunt’s house in Waterloo, Iowa, the son of Arnold and Lillie (Larson) Rude. He was raised on their family farm in rural Decorah and he attended country school near their home through 8th grade. He attended Waukon High School for one year then went to work at the Decorah-Posten, the Norwegian language newspaper published in Decorah. He then served in the U.S. Army and after service, returned to work at the Posten. He took correspondent courses and received his GED.
Bill was united in marriage to Dorothy J. Hoffman on June 26, 1955 at the First United Methodist Church in Decorah. They were blessed with four children: Robert, Susan, Karen and Allen.
Bill worked at Interstate Power Co. for 38 years, retiring in December 1994. He also served as an Auxiliary Policeman for the Decorah Police Department for several years. He later was a custodian at the Super 8 Motel and was a local real estate agent. Bill received the Quilt of Valor in October 2019.
Bill was united in marriage to Marian B. (Tollefsrud) Rovang on March 26, 1994 at First Lutheran Church in Decorah.
He liked bowling, camping and traveling, playing golf and his guitar, doing stained glass, working on old cars, repairing CB radios and TV’s, computers, and genealogy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Lillie (Larson) Rude; his son Allen Rude on June 27, 2016; his sister Norma (Walter) Hilberg; and his first wife, Dorothy Rude on June 20, 2015.
Bill is survived by his wife Marian Rovang Rude; three children: Robert (Sharon) Rude of Coralville, IA, Susan (Mark) Lenz of Harmony, MN and Karen (Steve) Quam of Decorah; nine grandchildren: Katy Rude, Nicholas (Hayley) Rude, Cory Rude, Darin Rude, David Lenz, Rachel Lenz, Kyle (Stacey) Quam, Heather (Matt) Strathman and Samantha Quam; five great-grandchildren: Brooke, Elijah, Zander, Jeremiah, Anna and expecting a baby boy in November; one sister, Charlotte Aswegan of Decorah; four brothers-in-law: Lawrence (Rhea) Tollefsrud, Gerald (Linda) Tollefsrud, Truman Allen (Brenda) Tollefsrud and Bernell (Kathy) Tollefsrud; and several nieces and nephews.
