THE SILENT REAPER.
CATHERINE DOEDERLINE OTTESON.
With scarcely any warning that life's end was so near the beloved wife of Rev. Jacob A. Otteson died last Saturday afternoon. The evening previous she went down town, accompanied by her daughter. On their return she spoke of feeling fatigued and retired. In the morning she arose as usual, prepared the morning meal, of which she partook, but after the daily prayer she fainted. Upon regaining consciousness she said she would be all right with a little sleep, and soon after passed into unconsciousness from which she never recovered. Death followed about one o'clock.
Catherine Doederline was born in Christiania, Norway, July 7, 1823, and was married June 11, 1852, to Rev. Jacob Aall Otteson. Soon after this event they departed for America, arriving here in September of the same year. They immediately came west, Mr. Otteson having been stationed at Manitowoc, Wis. Here they remained until 1860, when they moved to Koshkonong, Wis., where they remained until 1891. It was then that Rev. Otteson retired from active service in the ministry and Decorah was chosen as their future home. Here they have lived during the past eight years, loved and revered, as they were in their previous homes, by all who knew them. Coming as they did from a foreign land and settling first in what was then the far west, they became pioneers among pioneers, and as they have walked life's pathway together Mrs. Otteson has ever been a faithful, loving wife and helpmeet. Truly may the aged husband say that a Mother in Israel has gone to her long home.
Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Otteson, three of whom died in infancy and childhood, and a fourth, first wife of Rev. H. G. Stub—died in 1879. The remaining children are Miss Hannah C. Otteson and Rev. Otto Otteson, pastor of the Lutheran church at Sioux Rapids.
The funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at the First Lutheran church, and were very largely attended. Revs. H. G. Stub, V. Koren and L. Larson officiated, and the remains were interred in the Norwegian cemetery.
