Death of George Barthell.
Telegrams received in Decorah Monday morning announced the not unexpected death of George Barthell at his home in St. Paul from tuberculosis. Last winter at Winnipeg Mr. Barthell did heroic work in saving property of the United States Express Company from destruction by fire. In doing so he worked unceasingly in the cold, inhaling more or less smoke. This resulted in an illness which terminated in the disease which caused his death. George was a Decorah boy during his youth and early manhood, being the oldest son of William and Lucretia Barthell. When the office of the U. S. Express Company was in the store of Pennington & Powell he served as their delivery clerk and in that capacity became acquainted with and grew into the service of the express company. Promotion followed promotion until he became one of the trusted messengers with headquarters at St. Paul.
By his death a widow and several small children, beside his parents and brothers and sister, are left to mourn a kind and indulgent husband and father, and an affectionate son and brother. The funeral service and interment occurred In St. Paul.Transcriber’s Note: Find a Grave shows he was born Jan. 22, 1857 and died Oct. 8, 1899. He is buried in Oakland Cemetery in St. Paul, MN.
