John H. Burhans died at the home of his son Friday night, March 17th, after a lingering illness during which he was a great sufferer. J. H. Burhans was born May 6th, 1831, in Otsego Co., N. Y., where he spent the early part of his life. Later he emigrated to Grant county, Wis., where he married Sarah A. Davis, Sept, 5th, 1852. Three years later they moved to Iowa and located near the present site of Ossian, where they lived until the spring of 1857 when they moved to Springfield, Clayton Co. In 1867 they moved to Postville and later engaged in the hotel business until 1888, when they moved to Castalia and engaged in the same business until about a year ago. Mrs. Burhans preceded her husband to the great beyond a little over two years ago. As a result of their union two daughters and one son were born. The son only survives his parents. Mr. B. was widely known, from his personal contact with people in general, was always ready to assist in any benevolent enterprise, was generous to a fault, and no one was turned away from his door hungry. In politics be was a staunch Republican and alway{s} took an active part in political affairs, but never sought or coveted office. He was a good neighbor, kind and obliging, and will be greatly missed. The funeral was held at the M. E. church of this place Sunday, March 19th, and was conducted by the Masonic fraternity of which he had been an active member for forty years. Rev, Burton, of Postville, preached a very able funeral discourse. The body was interred at Postville, by the side of his wife and children.
