Paul L. “Dick” Headington, age 85, of Decorah, Iowa, died Saturday morning, August 29, 2020 at Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah of COVID-19.

A Private Family Graveside Service will be held on September 5, 2020 in the Russell Cemetery in rural Decorah with Military Honors by Decorah’s Veterans and Military Organizations. Rev. Hyeunmee Kang will be officiating.

Paul Lewis “Dick” Headington was born on April 4, 1935 at home in Canoe Township, rural Decorah, Iowa, the son of Paul E. and Leila A. (Enger) Headington. He attended a one room rural school, Canoe #1. He then graduated from Decorah High School with the class of 1953.

Dick started working at the Rooney Standard Service Station on Mechanic Street in Decorah for Charlie (Chuck) Rooney while in school and continued there after his graduation. He pumped gas, washed windows, checked the air tire pressure and took care of all related vehicle needs. Dick served in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959. Dick then came back to Rooney’s station after his military service and worked there until 1989 when Chuck retired. He also helped Chuck manage the local U-Haul Company rental franchise. He then worked at Leon’s Service Station for a while, then came back and managed the U-Haul Company franchise for many more years.

His longtime love and life partner was Mary Lou Hageman. Dick and Mary Lou liked to dance; Dick liked waltzes and polka music. He loved his farm life, his cow calf herd of shorthorns and sheep, his favorite dog Snoop and feeding his 40 cats. He liked to visit with all his neighbors and go to the Family Table Restaurant for coffee hour.

Dick became a resident of Aase Haugen Senior Services in Decorah on September 12, 2019.

He was preceded in death by his father Paul (1949), his mother Leila (1977), an infant brother (1917), his brother Arthur (1972) and his wife Claribel (2014), his brother Robert (1968) and his wife Lois (2019), his brother-in-law Carsten Jacobson (1989), and sister-in-law Edel Headington (2018).

Dick is survived by his life partner, Mary Lou Hageman; one sister, Mildred Jacobson of Decorah; and one brother, John (Jack) Headington of Decorah.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to Russell Cemetery. Memorials and cards can be sent to Mary Lou Hageman, 706 Clearview Drive, #1, Decorah, IA 52101.

The family wants to give a special thank you to the staff at Aase Haugen Senior Services for the wonderful, loving care Dick received.
