MRS. GEORGE BERNATZ.
A little after the noon hour last Saturday death entered the home of Alderman George Bernatz and claimed her who had been his helpmate and companion for a quarter of a century. Her illness dated back to about a year ago when consumption fastened itself upon her, and though she struggled bravely, and all the skill and care that physicians and loving hands could bestow were hers, it was all to no avail.
Elizabeth Shook was born in Sandusky, Ohio, Sept. 13th, 1855, and was one of a family of seven children. Of these her two brothers, Adam Shook, of West Superior, and Jacob Shook, of Austin, are the only survivors. When nine years of age her parents moved with their family to Brownsville. Minn. Here they resided six years, then moving to Rockford, Minn. At this place in 1873 she was married to George Bernatz, and two years later they moved to Fort Atkinson, Iowa, where the home was maintained until five years ago, when they came to Decorah to reside. Eight children were born to them, six of whom with the husband survive. The children are Mrs. Henry Giesen. Calmer, George, Herbert, Frank, Mabel and Albert. The funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at two o’clock. Rev. A. G. Wilson officiating, and the remains were internal in the Phelps cemetery.
Mrs. Bernatz has been it good wife and mother, and the family will feel her loss keenly. The sympathy of many friends go out to them in their bereavement.
