Uncle John Fisher.
To the obituary notice of the death John Fisher, on the 1st inst., copied from the last Ossian Bee, the REPUBLICAN desires to add tribute to his worth. Although differing radically in political opinions he was for upwards of thirty-three years a steady patron of the paper and the relations between the editor and Mr. Fisher were always cordial to geniality. He was sufficiently broad-minded to respect the opinions of others and could demand respect for his own. A man of unusual intelligence, upright character and worth, he has gone the long home to which we are heading. Peace to his ashes.Source: Decorah Republican Jan. 12, 1899 P 4 C 4
Died.
(Ossian Bee.)
FISHER—At Peoria, Ill., Jan. 1, 1899, John Fisher, aged nearly 87 years. Uncle John Fisher, who for 42 years was a familiar figure in this locality, has gone to his last reward. For two months past he had been at Peoria, Ill., taking treatment for a cancer on his hand; but to what extent this condition led to his death, cannot be known. It is thought that the course of treatment necessary to effect a cure was too severe for one of his advanced years, and enfeebled constitution and his death was the result of natural causes.
T. E. Pope, of Alpha, Iowa, a relative of deceased, was called to Peoria, to take charge of the remains and they were brought here Tuesday morning. John Fisher was born in Cumberland, Rhode Island, April 26th, 1812. He spent his boyhood days in that state, and also lived in Massachusetts and New York state, but mostly in Massachusetts, until he was about 40 years of age, when he came west and settled near Racine, Wis. After a residence of five years there he moved to Military township in 1856, making him a continuous resident of the county for 42 years. For 30 years he resided in this city. He was married three times, but survived his wives and one son by many years.
Uncle John Fisher, was too familiarly known in this community to need any extended enconium of praise at our hands. He was well liked by all, was a good citizen and neighbor and it may be finally said that the world in his spere was made the better by his having lived in it.
The funeral occurred yesterday (Jan, 4th) at 2 o’clock p. m. from the Methodist church and his remains were interred in the cemetery south of town.
