Blackburn, Thomas Spence 1830 – 1913

Thos. S. Blackburn, one of the old settlers of this vicinity, passed away last Sunday night at the old home, west of Ridgeway, at the age of 83. Death came as the result of the infirmities of age, Mr. Blackburn having been in failing health for some time. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at 2 o’clock, at the home, conducted by Dr. Robertson, with interment in New Oregon Cemetery.

Thomas Spence Blackburn was born May 5, 1830, at Benthem, Yorkshire, England, and came with the rest of the family to America in 1844 at the age of 14 years and located in Dane County, Wisconsin. On July 17, 1855, he was united in marriage to Jessie Stewart of Verona, Wis., and the first few years of their married life was spent on a farm near that town. In 1864 they moved to Winnesheik Co., Iowa, and settled on the farm which was his home until his death which occurred Oct 26, 1913, after an illness of only a few days.
He leaves to mourn his departure, his wife, two sons and four daughters, Robert, Mary Paley and Jessie Schorr, of Ridgeway. Iowa; James, of Royal, Neh.; Martha Jones, of Weyauwega, Wis., and Alice McQuatters, of Northwood, Iowa, also 24 grand children and eight great grandchildren. One son, John, died in infancy. Two sisters also survive him, Margaret Mason, of Le Roy, Minn., and Mary Douglas, of Brodhead, Wis. Besides the family, a host of friends and neighbors will miss this kindly man in the old home.
The funeral was held at the old home on Thursday, Oct. 30, conducted by Dr. D. T. Robertson. Interment was made in New Oregon cemetery.
